History Greater East Bay Bowling Senate (GEBBS)

The story of the Greater East Bay Bowling Senate (GEBBS) begins in the mid-1970s with a road trip that would change everything. In 1974, a passionate group of Oakland-area bowlers traveled to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to attend their very first National Tournament—alongside the San Francisco Bowling Senate. What they found there was more than competition. They discovered camaraderie, purpose, and a powerful connection to an African American bowling association rooted in friendship, fellowship, and the love of the game.

Inspired and energized, the group returned home with a vision.

Established circa 1974–1975, a bold vision became reality with the founding of the Oakland Bowling Senate. Guided by the pioneering leadership of President J. D. Grady, Vice President Ethel Simpson, and Tournament Director Lorenzo Lockhart, the Senate was built on purpose, passion, and community. Nearly sixty bowlers from across Oakland answered the call, igniting a movement that quickly gained strength. In less than five years, membership soared to nearly 200 bowlers—an enduring reflection of the Senate’s unity, resilience, and commitment to excellence.

As growth continued, the organization expanded and eventually divided into the Oakland Senate and the Vallejo Senate. The Oakland Senate later evolved into what is proudly known today as the Greater East Bay Bowling Senate (GEBBS).

The Senate on the Move

By the 1980s, GEBBS was unstoppable. Nicknamed “The Senate on the Move” throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, GEBBS earned a reputation for rapid growth, high energy, and unmatched activity. That momentum culminated in one of the Senate’s proudest achievements—being honored as Senate of the Year, a prestigious recognition reflecting excellence, leadership, and impact.

Champions On and Off the Lanes

GEBBS has long distinguished itself through extraordinary fundraising and national leadership. The Senate proudly sponsored four National Queens—Mrs. Madeline Beal (1982), Saundra Sweetwyne (1984, later serving as King and Queen Coordinator), Altovise Williams (2008), and Pamela Sterling (2022)—as well as National Princess Lula Peoples (2004). In addition, GEBBS produced four National Princes: Bobby Ray Richardson (1983 and 2003), Walter “Maurice” Mims (1987), and Raymond Lopez (1995).

The Senate’s commitment to youth and the future of bowling shines through its role in helping establish the National Battle of the Sexes Tournament, in collaboration with leaders from the San Jose Senate. This signature event continues to raise vital funds for the Junior Program Scholarship Program, leaving a lasting impact on generations to come.

Leadership That Shaped the Nation

Beyond competition, GEBBS has been a powerhouse of organizational leadership. Over the decades, members have served at the highest levels of tournament and national administration—guiding policy, shaping programs, and strengthening the organization’s foundation. From regional directors to national committee chairs, GEBBS leaders have consistently stepped forward to serve with excellence and integrity.

A Senate That Endures

GEBBS has honored two Life Members, Myrna Sloan and Bobby Ray Richardson—the latter also enshrined as a National Hall of Fame honoree. From 1980 to 1993, the Senate sustained an impressive 60-team league, boasting an annual prize fund exceeding $50,000. Membership over the years has reflected both challenges and triumphs, ranging from more than 400 members at its peak to approximately 85 at its lowest point.

Today, the story continues—stronger than ever.

With the addition of 120 new members, GEBBS is once again on the rise, fueled by the same passion and unity that sparked its founding more than five decades ago.

Honoring the Past. Building the Future.

The Greater East Bay Bowling Senate proudly carries forward the legacy of its founders—celebrating history, cultivating leadership, and continuing to move forward with purpose, pride, and the enduring spirit of bowling.
